The day my husband and I moved in together was a happy day already, so when the pretty gray kitty came running over from the neighbors’ back porch to welcome us, it was better. We are both cat people and already had three cats.

The kitty followed us everywhere for the next few days as we moved stuff in, and we fell in love with him. When we saw the neighbor outside, we commented on what a sweetie his cat was.
“Not my cat,” he said. “Some jerk pulled up in a truck a couple weeks ago and threw three cats into my yard. That one never left.”
That settled it; we now had four cats. We called our new kitty Diesel, because he smelled worse than diesel fuel every time he used the kitty box for a while. Dog only knows what that kitty had been eating, but it couldn’t have been good!
Diesel was about six months old, we guessed, and obviously preferred the boys. I tried to make him an indoor kitty like our others, but he urinated on the beds until I let him out. However, he never strayed far.

Diesel became my older son’s buddy, sitting under the truck while Alex worked on it. He also loves to “help” us in the garden, and can often be found hunting among the veggies. He keeps them gopher-free; I have often seen Diesel fly up a tree with a gopher in his jaws. He prefers dining with a view.
We have had Diesel nine years this month. He is our big boy at nearly 18 pounds, and the undisputed alpha cat in our house; we now have a few more than four. A seasoned old man, he is content to stay indoors, most of the time. I hope we have him another ten years or more.
